The words “feng shui” literally mean “wind-water,” but it is much deeper than that. “Feng” or wind represents the movement of energy (or chi) that we cannot see but we can feel. “Shui” or water represents the transformation of energy into different expressions, such as liquids, solids, and gases. Understanding feng shui means awareness of the constant interaction, however invisible, that we have with universal energy.

Since ancient times, humans have sought out mountainous locations to feel safe. Living in a raised location gives a sense of security, which is why many ancient rulers chose to build their palaces and fortresses in the mountains – allowing uninterrupted, expansive views of their territory. On the other hand, valleys and gorges provided immediate access to rivers and streams where trees and food sources are more abundant.

The most auspicious kind of geographic location has been cited in traditional feng shui textbooks as “seat, “easy chair,” or “throne.” This highly coveted throne-like location consists of a large mountain behind (like back support), two hills on the left and right (like arm rests), and a foothill below (like an ottoman).

Feng shui energy is considered very strong in canyons or valleys and the "chi" or energy gathered there is known to promote physical and mental health. In "Gorge of Longevity" we see Nature depicted as a dynamic water purification system... water descends from the clouds and glides through the filter of mountain minerals, eventually feeding mountain lakes and tumbling waterfalls... rushing into river gorges and hiding in underground springs.

Natural gorges are created when a river patiently cuts through a mountain for hundreds of thousands of years. Eventually, a narrow canyon is formed by the water carrying away particles of stone every day. Gorges thus symbolize a long and victorious life through conscientious living.

The gold and green mountains of "Gorge of Good Fortune" are symbolic of wealth and health because gold is associated with money and green is associated with thriving plants. The blue pine trees represent peace and longevity, and red orchids mean love and virtue.

In feng shui, water symbolizes wealth because it is ever-flowing and life-giving. The fishing boats on the calm river indicate abundance. Fishing boats are one of Chi-Jen Liu’s favorite symbols of prosperity and can be spotted in many of his landscape paintings.
